What am I doing here?

17 Nov

If you’re looking for sports scores you can go here. If you need an awesome healthy vegan baking recipe, you can go here. Is celebrity gossip your thing? Under water photography?

Have you noticed that many blogs have a defined purpose? I read somewhere (I’ve read it several times, actually) that a successful blog should be (generally) about one thing. If that’s the case I’m screwed. I’ve written about dogs, cats, sports, food, depression, anxiety, pee, poo, fitness, moles, coffee, books, and restroom etiquette (more than once).

Can I be more random than that? Besides family checking to see if I’m still alive, why would anyone to this site? Surprisingly, there are 173 subscribers to this blog. Yeah, I know, I didn’t believe it either, but I just looked. But if I want to bump that up to a several thousand I might have to tighten things up around here, you know–get my sh** together.

I’ve published over 90 posts here. That’s cool, but if a stranger came up to me right now and asked “What’s your blog about?” I would say “Get the hell out of my house you *!**!!*#@***. Then if I decided to answer, I’d say “Oh, um, It’s kinda about different stuff, you know, like, um, stuff and stuff like that.”

Here’s what I was going to integrate into this space:

My current focus in life, besides family, is maximizing overall happiness wellness (fighting off depression) through super nutrition, fitness, self-education, mindfulness, and flow. The benefits of living this lifestyle are numerous, but in a nutshell: I will feel and look better (I need all the help I can get) and live longer than I would rocking the standard American lifestyle. If I can do this consistently I’ll enjoy many more active years when my same-age peers are literally falling apart. Brutal, I know, but let’s be honest: people in this country take better care of their cars than they do themselves.

But please don’t think that I’m saying MY way is the way to live. Obviously, it isn’t. One path is not better than another. (Well, that’s not entirely true; if your path involves kicking puppies, my path is way better than yours.) We’re all on our own personal journeys towards…something, right? We’re all living the way we’re living due to our culture, genes, parents, friends, thousands of previous decisions, and this big ol’ mix of nutty randomness.

Well, after reading those two paragraphs several times, I decided NOT to integrate the “health stuff” into this blog. The last thing I want to do is to sound preachy or in any way superior. I’ll just blab about that stuff somewhere else–a new blog! There I can be snarky and a little mean, writing with more freedom, focusing solely on chronicling the unhealthy lifestyle choices that I see going on around me, as well as what I’m currently doing, whether making the same poor choices or making better ones. It will be my way of grabbing a few people by the shoulders, shaking, and yelling “Wake up!” The blog, empty now, will be here.

This space, however, will continue to be random because, well, LIFE is random. (or is it?) I realized that I’m running a personal blog here, a journal of what’s going on and what I find humorous, a place to turn life events into something resembling art. Like taking a picture at a birthday party, it’s a way to isolate an event, to strengthen the memory.

Also, it would be wonderful if this random, personal stuff survives the years so my grown children–as grandmas–can pull it up on their computers (what will a computer look like in 2062?) and show their grandchildren how silly great-grandpa was. Heck, I could still be alive in 2062. Wouldn’t that be cool?

Have a great day. Go create something awesome.

My blog is completely random too. I think all the time that I should focus it in on one aspect or another– music for children, poetry, art.(I loved the part where you said that you hoped what you write here would take on something resembling art– it does at times you know.)

I don’t know. Frankly, the same things don’t interest me from one day to the next. There’s everything from recipes to rantings on mine– politics, religion, poetry, sketchings… These days I figure becoming a blogging goddess is not my goal– my health insurance won’t cover regular therapy– so why not blog? WordPress becomes my therapist and my laptop is my proverbial couch… it works. 😉

Sidenote… I tried to create a blog focused on one subject. I never write there. Go figure.

I agree, blogging is therapeutic. It also makes you smarter because I didn’t know how to spell “therapeutic” until today. Keep writing . . . your blog is perfect.

Random thats the word I have been looking for to describe my blog. There is no way that I could focus on one thing. Focus what’s that?

Well, the consensus is in: random is good!

I like random ramblings, one of the reasons why I am so delighted to be one of the 173 and very excited that you are writing again. The other reason I am glad you are back is because you are one funny dude.

And snarky comments about others (including myself) doing unhealthy things sounds great. It may be inspirational!

But I *like* reading about your weird vegan food habits.

Sorry, Felicia – I didn’t mean my comment to be directed at you. WordPress is a bit unclear sometimes. Still, we seem to have pretty much the same view of this blog. 🙂

Oh good, I didn’t think anyone like to read about that, though many do think it’s “weird.”

Thanks! My wife tried to get some of those Walmart sheets on Friday, but they were gone in, like, 15 seconds. Your Christmas shopping is done?! Before December? Way to go.
